Nutrition & Feeding Guidance
Food is the Foundation
What we feed our pets matters.
Nutrition provides the building blocks for every system in the body—from the gut and immune system to metabolism, muscle, and healthy aging. It can be an important part of supporting wellness, managing disease, maintaining a healthy body condition, and helping our pets thrive throughout their lives.
At Nature & Nurture, nutrition isn't approached as a one-size-fits-all formula. We look at the whole animal and the life they're living: their age, breed, health history, body condition, activity, preferences, environment, and the goals you have for their health.
Sometimes the best choice is a thoughtfully selected commercial diet. Sometimes fresh or minimally processed foods can become an important part of the picture. For some pets, a carefully formulated home-prepared diet may be appropriate. And for pets with more complex nutritional needs, we can collaborate with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to ensure their diet is formulated safely and appropriately for their specific condition.
A More Thoughtful Approach to Feeding
There is an overwhelming amount of information about what pets should eat—and much of it is contradictory.
Our role is not to tell every pet owner that there is one perfect way to feed a dog or cat.
Instead, we help you understand the options, evaluate the quality and nutritional adequacy of those options, and choose an approach that makes sense for your pet, your family, and your goals.
Depending on your pet's needs, nutrition guidance may include:
- Evaluation of your pet's current diet and feeding routine
- Guidance on selecting commercial diets
- Fresh and minimally processed feeding strategies
- Versions of therapeutic nutrition for specific health concerns
- Healthy weight and body-condition management
- Treat, topper, and supplement guidance
- Transitioning between diets
- Guidance for incorporating appropriate whole-food ingredients
- Home-prepared diet planning
- Collaboration with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist for complex nutritional cases
Food Should Support the Whole Animal
We don't view nutrition in isolation.
What your pet eats is connected to digestion, the microbiome, metabolic health, immune function, body composition, energy, and quality of life. That's why nutritional recommendations are considered alongside your pet's broader health picture and, when appropriate, the diagnostic information we gather.
For pets with specific medical conditions—such as kidney or liver disease, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer, growth-related nutritional needs, or other complex conditions—we take additional care to ensure nutritional recommendations meet their medical requirements. When a case calls for specialized formulation, we collaborate with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.
For other patients, we can help you build a complete and balanced feeding approach using the tools and resources appropriate to your pet's individual needs.
There is no single "best" bowl for every pet.
